The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
