A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
